Why sleeping soundly helps to keep your skin looking beautiful.

Why sleeping soundly helps to keep your skin looking beautiful.

“Beauty sleep” is a well known fact and there is a truth in this saying.

It is well researched that a good nights sleep will help you to look fresh the following day. This is because while you are sleeping soundly your skin repairs and heals.

Let me tell you how it works: Every day while we are awake and out and about, your skin layers are being damaged by environmental pollutions, hot and cold air, rain, wind, sweat, pollen, airborne allergens, dust, smoke, mould, oil and petrol fumes, the sun ultraviolet rays and the list goes on. Dead skin cells become trapped when exposed to some of the dreaded damaging pollutants on this list, superficial blisters and irritation develops causing havoc with your skin.

Skin cells repair and rejuvenate faster when we are asleep than when we are awake.

So, if you don't get enough sleep, your body will struggle to do this and your body will become stressed. When your body is stressed, the immune system will release hormones called cytokines that are irritants to the skin. A consequence of this is puffy eyes, sagging wrinkly skin and irritated skin that can cause spots to develop. I often hear people telling me that they suffer with dull skin and spots when they are not getting enough sleep – does this sound familiar? Another consequence is a worsening of an existing skin condition such as eczema and acne.

However, when you do get enough rest and sleep your lymphatic drainage system flushes away such toxins. A selection of growth hormones will help to regenerate and repair tissue cells, muscle and bone. “Sleep study experts” have proven that when you are in the deepest part of your sleep, your skin will start to rejuvenate. If you don't get into a deep sleep or fail to have enough deep sleep, your skin will not repair.

This is why I can't preach enough about using the right skin care regime before you go to bed. As it is impossible to get a full nights sleep all the time and uninterrupted sleep happens frequently, the right skin care regime and products can help enormously.

If you would like to ask my advice on a skin care regime that is tailored for your individual skin type, please contact me. One last really good saying that we should also consider here is “every little helps”.
