The sun causes rapid ageing and crêpey wrinkly skin

The twin ladies in the photo attached, shows the rapid ageing of one twin who has had a life of working outdoors and her twin sister works indoors. The photo was taken when they were in their sixties, look at the ageing difference that has occurred due to “SUN DAMAGE”.

Now the summer is here you need to protect your skin from the harmful sun rays and reduce your risks of rapid and premature skin ageing. Every day we see sun worshippers coming into my clinic with skin that looks crêpey with widespread deep wrinkles and excess sagging due to extreme loss of volume and skin elasticity. It is a proven fact that UVA and UVB sun rays generate free radicals that breaks down collagen our skins plumpness, causing rapid ageing. Together with the natural occurring ageing process, sun worshippers look much older than they should.

The sun is also proven to cause DNA cell mutation that leads to skin cancers and the rays that penetrate deep into the skin are also know to cause broken blood vessels and abnormal pigment changes commonly known as “age spots”. Damaging sun rays can even get to your skin through glass, so you can catch the sun in the car, the conservatory and sitting by the window in the office.

Between midday and late afternoon when the sun rays are most dangerous you need to apply a high factor 50 sun block gel, every 2 hours. Using a sun umbrella, brimmed hat and UV blocking sunglasses are a must for added protection. And it goes without saying: the safer way to look bronzed is to have a spray tan or apply bottle tan.
