Skin Oils - Good or Bad?

Skin Oils - Good or Bad?

I see many skin problems in my clinic and a large percentage are as a result of using “oils” on the skin. There is a trend right now for using pure oil, tea tree oil, bio oil or heavy oil based products in an attempt to moisturise dry skin, but in fact oils will do quite the opposite.

If you believe that oils are natural, so must be good for your skin, then NO, think again.

Using facial oils can not only trigger acne outbreaks but also cause dull skin. This is because the oil sits on the skin trapping and clogging old dead skin cells, creating a film or barrier preventing dead skin from shedding or ex foliating away naturally.

If you use oils in an attempt to make your skin glossy and glowing, then NO, you will not achieve this as under the oil the dead skin cells mount up and over the months will make the skin duller and duller.

If you are an acne sufferer or prone to occasional outbreaks of spots, using oil based products will clog the pores with old dead skin cells, causing congestion which in turn leads to superficial infection and a spot develops. Layers and layers of dead skin cells create the perfect environment for bugs and bacteria's and your skin will become a breeding ground for spot formation.

Your skin should naturally produce enough oils to keep your skin PH normal and healthy. However, if you use the wrong cleaner, moisturise and toners that strip out natural oils from the skin, then your skin will feel dry, arid and tight. The answer to this problem is simple, change your skin care products.

So to recap: NO facials oils and NO oil based products such as emollients NO oily make ups or moisturisers that are greasy. If you have to wash your fingers after applying your moisturiser, then it is probably a bad one.

Don't choose your skin care by trends or TV adverts. The skin care regime I would recommend is simple: in the morning, wash you face with a cleanser that contains glycolic that will ex foliate and leave your skin feeling soft and not tight. Apply a factor 50 sun protection that soaks directly into the skin and leaves no visible trace and apply a moisturiser that does the same. In the evening, wash your face as above, apply your moisturiser and “get into bed”! In my professional opinion, using multiple products causes multiple problems. And ditch the toners and primers, they DONT WORK!

Using the right skin care products with the right active ingredients will strengthen the skin structures leaving your skin felling soft, moisturised, glowing and radiant.

If you would like to have a FREE skin assessment and advice from me, call the clinic and I would be delighted to introduce you to the right products tailored for your individual skin. Good skin requires good products – a fact!
